What is MCP and why is it useful for your website

You hear the term MCP more and more when it comes to AI. If you have a website, it is one of the few AI terms that pays off directly. It is the reason your AI writes a text for you and then helps to get that text online. This article explains it in plain words.

MCP in plain words

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is a standard that lets an AI app work with other services. Think of it as a power socket: the AI app has the plug, the service has the socket. If the plug fits, the AI can use the service.

A service that offers MCP provides a list of actions. For us those are, for example, “show the backups”, “read this file” and “show the DNS records”. Your AI reads that list and uses an action when you ask for it in a conversation. You do not need to know the names.

Without MCP you copy text from a conversation yourself, open an SFTP program and click through your portal. With MCP that happens in the conversation itself, within what you allow.

What this means for your website

We have built an MCP connection for your hosting plan. You connect it to Claude, ChatGPT or another app that supports custom connectors. Your AI can then do this for you:

This differs per plan. A Website plan has the website, backup and DNS parts, a Mail plan the mail parts and Website + Mail both. The full list and what is available now is on the MCP page.

An example from start to finish

You have a static website that you built with Claude. You open a conversation and write: “Change the phone number in the footer, and make a backup first.” What happens then:

1. Claude makes a backup.
2. Claude reads the file, changes the number and writes it back. That becomes a new version of your site.
3. You open your site and see the new number.
4. If something is wrong, you ask for the previous version and it is live again.

What it is not

A few misunderstandings we hear often:

• MCP is not a new AI. It is the connection between your AI and a service.
• Your AI does not get your password. The login runs through a link in your mail and the permission you give.
• Your AI does nothing on its own. It works in a conversation that you start.
• Editing files through chat applies to static sites. With WordPress your AI can make or restore a backup, write posts and pages as drafts, manage images and menus and show the security status. Publishing asks for your approval and you undo any change. You manage plugins and themes in WordPress, or you choose our Changes option (€ 49 per month, excluding VAT).

How do you stay in control?

An AI is fast. That is why there are a few fixed points where you decide:

• Permission when connecting. You choose read only or manage per website. With read only your AI cannot change anything.
• Confirmation for major actions. Your AI first explains what is going to happen and asks for your confirmation, for example for restoring a backup or a change to your main domain in DNS.
• Approval in the portal for the heaviest actions. Deleting a site or database needs a link that you approve in the portal. Your AI cannot do that itself.
• Check for keys. Files with API keys or passwords that were included by accident do not simply go online. You then choose what happens.
• Being able to go back. Every file change is a version of its own, and before a restore the system first makes a safety copy.
• Overview and revoking. In your portal you see which apps are connected and what they have done. You revoke one app or pause all AI access in one go.

Actions that involve money, such as changing a payment or a subscription, always need your explicit approval.

How to start

1. In the portal, open the Connect your AI page and copy the address.
2. Add it to your AI app as a custom connector.
3. Log in with the link we mail you and choose read only or manage.
4. Ask your first question, for example how your site is doing.
